Press Coverage & Reviews
“Jürgen Kracht has known China for 55 years—like very few others. His compelling account of European entrepreneurs in China is also a powerful encouragement to continue placing confidence in the opportunities offered by the Chinese market.”
Professor Hermann Simon, Founder and Chairman of Simon-Kucher in 2026
“No other German manager can draw on the wealth of experience that Jürgen Kracht has gained in China and Hong Kong since 1971. His book is essential reading for anyone wishing to look beyond the surface of political and media-driven controversy and distortion.”
Professor Eberhard Sandschneider, Political Scientist and East Asia Expert, in 2026
“Jürgen Kracht is one of the pioneering figures of the German China community. Now 70, and as energetic as ever, he can look back on four and a half decades of experience in doing business with China. In this book, he traces 300 years of German engagement in a country that has lost none of its fascination for him.
At the same time, he reflects on his own experiences and on the people who shaped German business relations with China—people with whom he shares many memories. He shows how China has developed from the “workshop of the world” into a high-tech nation and explores what the future holds for German economic relations with this “China 2.0.”
For a long time, China learned from the world. Must the world now also be prepared to learn from China? Jürgen Kracht—who, as a consultant, has helped numerous medium-sized companies enter the Chinese market and who has entrusted the management of his company to his son, Stefan, in recent years—answers this question with a clear “yes.”
A compelling read and a highly personal perspective.”

ChinaContact — Book Review
Few people have experienced the development of the Chinese market at such close range as Jürgen Kracht. He began his new position in Hong Kong in 1971 and, by 2017, had become a successful entrepreneur in the consulting sector and an internationally recognised China expert.
He has now brought together his experiences and insights in the book This Is China: Tracing 300 Years of Business with China (Das ist China – Auf Spurensuche durch 300 Jahre China-Geschäft).
In an interview with Wirtschaftsforum, Jürgen Kracht discusses his motivation for publishing the book and considers what we can learn from China today.
