BOOK INTRODUCTION
DAS IST CHINA – Auf Spurensuche durch 300 Jahre China-Geschäft
This book is written in German and will be published in the beginning of 2019. An English edition is planned for 2019 and will be titled:
THIS IS CHINA – Tracing the past through 300 years of China business
The book
With this book, the China expert Jurgen Kracht analyses and describes 300 years of China’s economic relations with the German speaking countries Germany, Austria and Switzerland, i.e. from the beginning until today. Initially, tea and porcelain were imported from China. But the ships mostly carried no cargo on the way to China – until the British had the idea to compensate for the rapid increase in imports with opium from India. Today, 300 years later, China is closely intertwined with the world economy; be it as “factory of the world”, in international trade and as a target country for foreign investments and, more recently, as the source of overseas investment. At the centre of the book is Krachts 47 years’ experience in China business, beginning in 1971. At that time, China was a closed country and the culture-revolution was wreaking havoc. Nobody knew what the future would be.
Today, China is well established at the table of the super-economic powers. The book describes the stony path to the present – always from the perspective of a man of the Mittelstand, who has supported many companies’ China market entry and later business success. His lively description of this sometimes difficult development is impressively supplemented by conversations with contemporary witnesses.
Carefully researched, the author draws a total perspective of the China business through history and stories.
